Smart meter 4G upgrade – what you need to know
May 6 2026
Switch Up. Stay Smart.
Smart meters across the UK are being upgraded to make sure they continue to work as older 2G and 3G mobile networks are gradually switched off. These networks are being replaced with faster and more reliable 4G technology, which helps keep smart meters connected and working properly.
This is a planned national upgrade carried out by energy suppliers. It helps ensure your smart meter can continue to send readings securely and automatically.
Why are smart meters being upgraded?
Smart meters use mobile networks to send readings to your energy supplier. As 2G and 3G networks are being switched off across the UK, some smart meters need to be upgraded to 4G so they can keep working properly.
What will change?
In most cases, your energy supplier will update or replace the communications hub in your smart meter. This is the part that sends readings to your supplier.
If you have an older first-generation smart meter, the whole meter may need to be replaced.
Do I need to do anything?
No. There’s nothing you need to do right now.
If your smart meter needs an upgrade, your energy supplier will contact you. They will arrange a convenient appointment and carry out the work for you.
The upgrade will not cost you anything.
Will my smart meter still work after the upgrade?
Yes. After the upgrade, your smart meter will work as normal.
You will still have:
- accurate bills based on your actual energy use
- automatic readings sent to your energy supplier
- access to flexible schemes and tariffs that could offer rewards
Why is this happening now?
Mobile networks are changing across the UK. As 2G and 3G are switched off, smart meters need updated technology to stay connected.
This upgrade is part of a wider national programme to make sure smart meters remain reliable, secure, and ready for the future.
When will I be contacted?
Your energy supplier will contact you when it is your turn for an upgrade. This will happen gradually as part of the national rollout.
You do not need to take any action until you hear from them.
Is my smart meter faulty?
No. Your smart meter is not faulty.
The upgrade is simply to make sure it can continue to communicate once older mobile networks are switched off.
